The Wombat - A Large Burrowing Marsupial
July 22nd, 2008Wombats are particularly large and muscular animals that are know to grow over a meter in length. It has large claws attached to it;s powerful legs which it uses for burrowing. Although generally non aggressive the wombat can have bad days where it’s mood may make it irritable.
Such mood swings would not be a problem for people except that some Australians in rural areas do try to keep wombats as pets. Where a wild specimen would shy away from humans a domestic animal is used to people. As a result the wombat can lash out at it’s keepers without provocation or warning.
One of the most well known and loved wombats was ‘Fatso’ from the Australian weekly series called ‘A Country Practice’. Fatso was the beloved house pet of Wandin Valley police man Frank Gilroy and wife Shirley.
